Charity Category: Environment

Arbor Day is a nationally-celebrated observance that encourages tree planting and care.
The idea for Arbor Day originated in a once tree-less Nebraska. J. Sterling Morton was among one of the pioneers who moved to the Nebraska Territory in 1854. He and his wife were lovers of nature, and the home they established in Nebraska was quickly planted with trees, shrubs and flowers. Arbor Day was officially proclaimed on March 12, 1874, and in 1885 was proclaimed a legal holiday. Today, Arbor Day is celebrated nationwide, the most common date for the observances is the last Friday in April, coinciding with the best tree planting weather.
